Trackwise Bike Ride for CLIC Sargent

Dear All

I trust that you all have had a good summer.

The 17 year old son of one of my colleagues at Trackwise was unfortunately diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma earlier this year.  He is doing pretty well with treatment but I am sure that we can all empathise and understand that it has been and continues to be a very difficult time for him and his family.

A group of Trackwise friends and colleagues are riding 60-odd miles on Saturday 4th September in aid of CLIC Sargent – ‘Caring for children and young people with cancer and their families..’

I appreciate that there are always plenty of request for charitable donations at home and abroad - but I hope that you consider this to be a good cause.

Please donate online to CLIC Sargent – www.bmycharity.com/v2/marcelleker - and any donations made will be matched 1:1 by Trackwise – so sign over your book advance and help to make a big difference.

Trackwise will acknowledge your gift on our website and in our annual newsletter.

Please give generously to this good cause.

Many thanks and best wishes

Philip

1989-2009. Trackwise celebrates 20 years

Trackwise is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009.  Having been founded in May 1989 as Trackwise Designs Ltd, a PCB design bureau, Trackwise soon moved into PCB manufacture. In 1986 we were asked to manufacture a very large PCB, one of the early GSM900 base station antennas.

Having survived the acquisition of the company by Philip Johnston in 2000 and the near-collapse of the TMT sector in 2001, Trackwise have gone from strength to strength, being awarded the Queen's Award for Export in 2005, acquiring its main UK competitor in 2006 to become the principal UK supplier of antenna and PTFE PCBs.

The story of Trackwise over 20 years could not have taken place without the dedication of a large number of employees - 6 of whom have now been with Trackwise for more than 10 years.  Between the current employees of Trackwise, we have more than 120years of experience of manufacturing PTFE PCBs.

HRH the Duke of Kent visits Trackwise

Duke of Kent visits Trackwise
Trackwise were greatly honoured by the visit of HRH the Duke of Kent as President, The Engineering Council to the company on Tuesday March 3rd.

Accompanied by HM Lord-Lieutenant for Gloucestershire, Mr Henry Elwes, HRH the Duke of Kent was welcomed by Philip Johnston - who gave him an introduction to the company and its 20 year history and then was given a tour of the Trackwise facility by Mike Prosser and Colin Hallam.

The photograph shows Conrad Bailey explaining to HRH the Duke of Kent the very wide range of products manufactured by Trackwise, including parts exported from UK to China, India and Thailand.

February 2009
Trackwise book record order intake

Driven by demand from all corners of the globe - especially AsiaPac region, Trackwise are delighted to report that in February 2009 they booked their best month of order intake for five years.

Chinese mobile infrastructure spend is soaring as the long-awaited 3G roll-out starts in earnest (equipment spending by Chinese mobile operators is estimated to hit $41bn over the next two years) and this is having a knock-on effect upon all aspects of the industry (including material lead times).

Trackwise had foreseen the current economic downturn and have reduced their factory footprint from 11,500sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. (July 08 to Jan.09) in order to minimise overheads in a potentially difficult period.  For the time being, this downturn has not affected Trackwise order book and the company remains very fully loaded.

December 2008
Trackwise reorders its manufacturing facility

Trackwise had broadly anticipated the current global slowdown (we should have shorted the stock market, rather than manufactured RF PCBs - far less work and far more profitable!) and as a result have recently completed a reorganisation of our manufacturing facility to suit the anticipated needs of the market in 2009 and beyond.

Trackwise have reduced their manufacturing footprint by nearly 60% without affecting capability or capacity.  The more compact facility has had a strongly beneficial effect on operations, quality - and of course, overheads.

Together with the world class RF PCB manufacturing facility of Trackwise Epitome India, the new-format Trackwise is well equipped to meet the quick turn and volume manufacturing requirements of the antenna and RF community now and into the future.

Trackwise lead vendor suite at Jaybeam Wireless

Trackwise have lead the introduction of a vendor suite arrangement at Jaybeam Wireless’ facility in Wellingborough UK www.jaybeamwireless.com whereby Trackwise and other key suppliers have set up an office and store within the Jaybeam Wireless facility and deliver product on a JIT basis against a shared build schedule.

This new method of working is a reflection of the close relationship between the two companies and is designed to allow both parties resources to be focused on removing cost from the product rather than on overheads associated with a traditional customer/supplier relationship.

Steve Roberts said (Managing Director) “The move to vendor suites is a major strategic move for Jaybeam that will eventually involve all of our major suppliers. Under this initiative vendors are required to set their own orders, manufacture to meet our schedule and deliver to their own warehouse within Jaybeam’s premises. Change of this nature requires trust and partnership; Jaybeam Wireless is delighted that Trackwise led our vendors in making this leap and with complete success”

Trackwise wins Queens Award

Gloucestershire printed circuit board manufacturer Trackwise has won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, following its success in increasing exports from £500,000 to more than £2m in just three years. The award will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Mr Henry Elwes, on Wednesday July 6 at 3 pm.

Trackwise, based in Delta Drive, Tewkesbury, specialises in the manufacture of very large high-frequency printed circuit boards (PCBs) for the antennas in the cellphone base stations run by mobile phone operators around the world. The boards are anything up to 2.8 metres in length – putting them among the biggest manufactured anywhere in the world.

Formed in 1989 and bought out by local businessman Philip Johnston five years ago, Trackwise is one of the few manufacturers in the world able to make such big PCBs to the necessary high degree of precision.

The company, which employs 19 people, exports to countries around the world, including the USA, Australia, Europe and the Far East – it has even begun exporting to China, a highly-competitive exporter of PCBs to the rest of the world.

“This is the fruit of several years’ investment in equipment and personnel” said Philip Johnston, Managing Director. “We have designed and equipped our factory specifically for the manufacture of PCBs for antennas, which allows us to remain competitive by keeping quality high and cost down.

“As a small company we’re extremely proud of this achievement and the staff deserve a great deal of credit for working together so effectively to make it all possible.

“To enable the company to continue growing in the face of tough international opposition, we are now turning our skills and experience to pursue other markets within the radio-frequency and microwave industries.”

Her Majesty’s representative in Gloucestershire, the Lord Lieutenant, Mr Henry Elwes, will carry out the formal award presentation at Trackwise on Wednesday 6th July at 3 pm. The factory will be open to visitors from 2 pm. There will be a brief tour of the factory by the Lord Lieutenant, Trackwise principals and associates of the company, followed by the formal ceremony.
